A Deeper Look at Seborrheic Dermatitis

Individual living with seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis may be more common and impactful than you think

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that typically occurs in areas that have a lot of oil glands.

Seb derm is not contagious, though it is a chronic (ongoing) condition.

The condition impacts approximately 10 million Americans

How seb derm
affects your skin

It’s not fully known what causes seb derm, but it’s understood to involve three interrelated factors:
skin disruption, oil gland activity, and yeast presence.

INFLAMMATION

Skin disruption

Some people may be more prone to inflammation because of altered immune reactions.

Oil gland activity

People with seb derm can produce more oil than usual, and seb derm symptoms occur where there are more oil glands.

INFLAMMATION

Yeast presence

A naturally occurring yeast on the skin called Malassezia can feed on skin oils and cause irritation.

Appearance and symptoms

Seb derm can present differently in each person, and symptoms can come and go over time.

Symptoms often occur in the oily areas of the face, and regions including:

Don’t underestimate the impact

Seborrheic dermatitis can be both visible and uncomfortable. The condition is chronic and can relapse, so symptoms need to be managed accordingly.

In a nationwide online survey conducted in 2022 among 300 people diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis:

76% agreed that others don’t understand the negative impact on their daily lives

61% agreed that their current treatment options were too time consuming
